The Psychology That Kills Returns

Automating Away Bad Decisions

Automating Away Bad Decisions

The best investing strategy is the one you can ignore for 30 years. Automation is how you build a system that wins by not requiring you to make decisions.

Dollar-Cost Averaging

Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) means investing a fixed amount on a fixed schedule regardless of what the market is doing.

  • $500 every month into VTI
  • Regardless of whether the market is up, down, or sideways
  • Automatically, from your paycheck or bank account

When prices are high, your $500 buys fewer shares. When prices are low, it buys more. Over time, you naturally accumulate more shares at lower prices and fewer at higher prices without any judgment required.

DCA does not maximize returns in theory. It maximizes the probability that you will stay invested in practice, which is what actually matters.

Setting Up Auto-Invest

Every major brokerage supports automatic investment:

  1. 401k: Usually deducted automatically from your paycheck. Already automated.
  2. IRA: Set up automatic monthly transfers from your checking account. In Fidelity: Accounts > Transfer > Automatic Investments. In Vanguard: My Accounts > Transact > Automatic Investment Plan.
  3. Taxable: Same process as IRA -- schedule monthly purchases of your chosen funds.

Set it up once. Review it annually. Ignore it the rest of the time.

The Automation Stack

A fully automated investing life looks like this:

  1. Paycheck arrives -> 401k contribution taken pre-tax automatically
  2. 1st of every month -> automatic transfer to IRA
  3. 5th of every month -> automatic purchase of VTI/VXUS/BND in IRA
  4. Dividends -> automatically reinvested
  5. Once per year -> review allocation, rebalance if needed

Total active time per year: 30 minutes for the annual review.

The Psychological Superpower of Automation

When investing is automatic, market news becomes irrelevant to your behavior. The market dropped 15% today? Your automatic purchase next week buys 15% more shares. The market is up 20% this year? Your automatic purchase continues regardless.

You have removed yourself from the decision. And removing yourself from the decision is the most powerful thing a long-term investor can do.

TIP

Set up your automatic investments so they happen 2-3 days after payday. This way, the money moves to investments before you can spend it. Automating contributions is more effective than trying to invest 'what is left over' at the end of the month -- because there is rarely anything left over.
