Advanced Moves (When You Are Ready)
Once the fundamentals are in place and automatic, there are a few additional tools worth knowing. These are optimizations -- not requirements.
Tax-Loss Harvesting
In a taxable brokerage account, if a fund is down from your purchase price, you can sell it, immediately buy a similar (but not identical) fund, and claim the loss on your taxes.
Example: You bought $10,000 of VTI. It dropped to $8,000. Sell VTI, buy ITOT (iShares Core S&P Total Market ETF -- similar but not identical). You harvest a $2,000 tax loss while staying invested.
That $2,000 loss can offset $2,000 of capital gains elsewhere, or reduce ordinary income by up to $3,000 per year. The tax savings compound over time.
Rules to follow:
- The wash-sale rule prohibits repurchasing the same or substantially identical security within 30 days
- Only applicable in taxable accounts (IRAs have no capital gains anyway)
- Worth considering at tax time or after any significant market drop
I-Bonds as an Emergency Fund Enhancement
US Treasury I-Bonds earn interest tied to inflation. In periods of high inflation they pay above-market rates. They are backed by the US government, carry zero default risk, and are state-tax-free.
Downside: You cannot access the money for 12 months. And you forfeit 3 months of interest if you redeem before 5 years.
For the portion of your emergency fund you are unlikely to need in the near term, I-Bonds can be a better-yielding alternative to a savings account.
Purchase at TreasuryDirect.gov. Limit: $10,000 per person per year.
When a Financial Advisor Actually Makes Sense
For most index investors following this course, a financial advisor is not necessary. The strategy is simple enough to execute alone.
However, an advisor may be worth consulting when:
- Your net worth exceeds $1M and tax optimization becomes complex
- You are going through a major life event (divorce, inheritance, business sale)
- You are within 5 years of retirement and need a drawdown strategy
- You need help with estate planning, trusts, or complex asset structures
If you engage one, hire a fee-only fiduciary advisor. They charge a flat fee or hourly rate. They do not earn commissions. The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) maintains a directory.
Avoid advisors who earn commissions on products they recommend. Their incentives are not aligned with yours.
The Finish Line
You now have everything you need:
- Why index funds win (fees, performance, compounding)
- What you are actually buying (ownership, bonds, market mechanics)
- How to build your portfolio (three funds, allocation, account order, brokerage)
- How to survive the psychology (behavior gap, crashes, automation)
- What to do now (emergency fund, open accounts, automate, rebalance)
The rest is time. Be patient with it.
The goal of this entire course is not to make investing complicated -- it is to make it simple enough to ignore. A three-fund portfolio, automated contributions, and one annual rebalancing check is genuinely all you need to build significant long-term wealth. Everything else is optimization at the margins. Master the basics and you have mastered investing.
